Katherine Spellman Metropolitan Funeral

Katherine Sawyer Spellman was born February 29, 1928, in Camden County, North Carolina to the late Richard and Jeannette Sawyer. She was the youngest girl and number 14 of 15 children. 

Katherine, who they called “Lil Girl” received her early education in Camden County, North Carolina.. She started her Spiritual Life at New Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church.

She married the love of her life, Ernest Randolph Spellman November 11, 1944.  They soon migrated north to New York to work. She furthered her education in Cosmetology where she was licensed for over 45 years. She and her husband worked together until they purchased and built a home in Southampton, New York where they resided for over 65 years.. They were married for 72 years until his death in 2017.

She worked at Evelyn Beauty ‘s Shop in Southampton with her dear friend Evelyn Baxter. She did hair at this location for over 20 years until she added shop space in her home. In her later years, she also worked as a nursing aide and cared for many at home and in the hospital..

After leaving NC, she continued her spiritual life by joining Kings Chapel COGIC, Southampton, NY under the leadership of Dr. Joseph A. King. For several years she served under Bishop Frank O. White until the installation of Bishop Frank A. White, where she served until her illness. She was active in many Ministries to include Sunday School teacher, Sunshine Band director, Adult Choir, and the Mothers’ Board.

Mother Katherine loved and adored her family and her Church. She was a mother, Godmother, and foster mother to so many children and touched many lives, always putting God first.

With loving memories, she leaves to celebrate her life; her daughter Annette Slade (Kelvin) her great nephew and nieces Darrell Evans (Nadia), Paula Spence (Mac), Yolanda Ward (Paul). Grandchildren: Akira Barclay (Michael), Aaron L. Warren, Jonathan Slade, and China Slade. Special nieces Elnora Evans, Denise Canada Taylor, Myra Bass, special nephew Robert “Bobby” Cowell, foster daughter Agge Robinson and her children, great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
