Brynn Whitfield opened up to her co-stars on The Real Housewives of New York about the neglect that she faced in her childhood and how “scared” she felt after being removed from her parents’ home because of mistreatment.

Things took a serious turn on the latest episode of the The Real Housewives of New York. The antics between the ladies suddenly got…real…when Brynn Whitfield went into detail about the neglect in her childhood and explained why she was so incredibly scared after being removed from her parents’ home.

In previous episodes, Brynn explained that she did not grow up with her biological parents, noting that they “got into some trouble” that left them unable to raise her.

The 36-year-old and her siblings were instead raised by her maternal grandmother Darlene Heslin. Although they were taken in by family, that did not take away all of the pain of such a difficult transition.

“My grandma — my mom’s mom — came in and she adopted us and I was scared I was going to get taken away,” Brynn revealed to the rest of the cast. “I just remember for three years I was scared.”

She emphasized, “I was scared out of my mind. It was f**ked up.”

After being removed from her parents’ home because the situation there was unfit, the reality star felt like she had to prove herself to be able to live somewhere else.

Brynn remembered thinking as a child, “If I’m cute enough and funny enough and smart enough and clever enough and I don’t complain, then they’ll let me stay where I want to.”

Sadly, this trauma had dangerous consequences for her when she was younger.

“I was so upset that I actually, like, [as] a first grader, I like drank a bottle of Dimetapp because I wanted to sleep forever,” she revealed to her co-stars. Dimetapp is an over-the-counter children’s cold medicine.

The other cast members were saddened to learn what Brynn had gone through.
